In boys lacrosse, like any other team sport, understanding the function, role and importance of every position is necessary for a team to function properly. The positions in a boys lacrosse team are that of goalie, defenders, midfielders and attackers. Each position has a specific role to play in the game and requires different skills for children occupying the position.

There is one goalie in a boys lacrosse game. As in football or hockey, the goalie’s position is between the goal posts and his job is to prevent the ball from getting into the net. The goalie, who has the best view of an opposing team’s attack, is also responsible for coordinating with the defense and alerting them about picks. The goalie also initiates an offensive play whenever he blocks a shot by passing the ball to a midfielder in the right position to start an attack. The goalie must be ready to intercept shots from all directions. This requires excellent hand and eye coordination as well as quick reflexes from any player who wants to assume the position of goalie in a boys lacrosse team.

A boys lacrosse game has three defenders. These players stay beyond the midfield line and, together with the goalie, are responsible for preventing the opposing team from making any goals. Using good footwork, the defenders keep the opposing team’s players under surveillance and check the attackers. Defenders also need to excel at passing in order to get an intercepted ball to their own midfielders  to initiate an attack.

There are three  midfielders in a boys lacrosse game. They cover the largest area of the field and have the greatest influence in both defensive and offensive plays. On defense, the midfielder in a boys lacrosse team needs to aggressively stick with the opposing team’s attackers and prevent them from attempting to get into a scoring position. In offense, the midfielder needs to recognize scoring opportunities by his team’s attackers and get the ball to them.

The three attackers in a boys lacrosse game are responsible for scoring goals. They roam the opposing team’s half of the field and maneuver for positions to score. Relying on passes from midfielders, the attacker must have great dexterity and the quickness to spring free from the opposing team’s defenders.
